The Bluffs on Thompson Creek
About
The Bluffs on Thompson Creek enjoys a beautiful setting tucked away amid mature hardwood forests. Creeks freely meander throughout the golf course, interconnecting with the sparkling ponds that can be found throughout. The layout is an Arnold Palmer design that takes advantage of the hills, bluffs, and hollows of the varied landscape. You face uneven lies and a few blind shots thanks to the terrain but you'll also get scenic views of the surrounding area. Accuracy is important to have but it's not an overly punishing layout if you happen to be errant. The golf course has a challenging start with an uphill par 3 as the opening hole. Another memorable hole is the par-3 eighth, which features a 50-foot drop to the fairway below. It's both an intimidating and beautiful hole.

Great course - bunkers not maintained
Course layout is great - very challenging. Condition of greens was very good, and fairway conditions were good. However, bunkers were in very poor condition with virtually no sand. My understanding is that these have been improved since we played - but it was disappointing to see such a great layout that was not being maintained on all facets. Also, the #2 hole was converted from par 5 to par 4, but distance markers, etc.. not changed to provide proper distances.
Wish the greens were faster
The fairways were dry and thus we rolled through several. But it would have been nice if the greens were faster. They were green but very slow.
Close enough to Baton Rouge
The course was under repair for a few of the holes. The grass is almost over it’s winter season. A really fun and challenging course. Will definitely play this course again!
The course still isn't where it was years ago.
Overall the course is in decent shape. The tee boxes were surprisingly not well taken care of and the par 5 4th hole was cut in half and had a temporary green. Maintenance has to take place at times but there was no mention of this from GolfNow or from the clubhouse. That was disappointing.
Lots of Potential
We played around 9am, cloudy skies, temp about 60 degrees. This course has suffered ftom heavy rains and flooding on several holes over the past year. The good part: greens in good condition, smooth and fast. The not so good part: fairways splotches and inconsistent. Sand traps are abysmal...full of water & leaves, unplayable. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food in the grill is always good as is the service.
If you can get a good deal on tee times, you will like the layout. It's a tough course with lots of potential, but not in good shape.
Staff Omitted Vital Information
What a great piece of land for a golf course. Problem is they forgot to tell us that even though they were charging full price two of the holes were not available to play. On top of that the vast majority of the greens were in very bad shape with huge areas of grass missing or recently sodded over. The fairways were extremely sandy and several of the holes also had damage from what appeared to be flooding. This club realistically is $20-25 club in its current condition.
bad greens
No one warned us or told us that holes 2 and three were in playable. Paying full price for that was disappointing and considering the weather for the last three to 4 weeks the greens were poor. Large patches of no grass and where there was grass on the greens it was un-cut and hairy.
Retirement community?
The course is excellent and with certain on line deals, reasonable. However it never fails to get behind groups of 5 or more playing extremely slow.
Great layout. Not so great condition.
The course has always been a great layout with great scenery. It hasn’t been very well maintained as of late. And for $70, there are plenty of other courses around that are in much better shape and surely a much better value. If you can get it on a hot deal I’d recommend it but if not, go to Beaver Creek.
Bunkers are malnourished
Course is great even after the flood, but the bunkers need serious attention. I damaged my sandwedge when it struck an imbedded rock.
Very slow pace
Pace is very slow. Holes 7-9 took 1:30 to play. Line at hole 10, after waiting an hr with 2 groups still ahead I gave up and left without playing the back side. Course was in good shape.
Very Disappointing
I was really looking forward to playing this course, having heard so much about the layout and reviews from others. About a year ago, there were torrential rains and horrible flooding throughout the Baton Rouge area and many courses, including The Bluffs were inundated with water which took a long time to recover from.
The day I made my reservation, I called about course conditions and was told that the course was in "great shape". Well, the course is NOT in great shape...it's not even in decent shape. The greens had recently been verticut and there was sand loosely applied and even clumped all over every green. In fact, there was more sand on the greens than in the traps, which were in horrible condition...hard pans and gravel with many being totally washed out.
After the round, I went to the pro shop and talked to the pro (Tom) about my experience. He seemed rather nonchalant and unconcerned about the course condition and offered me a comment card that he said he would share with the course superintendent. No apology, and a real lack of interest in my input.
A real bright spot, though were the three guys I was paired with. We had a great time and I was fortunate to be able to play with such a fun group.
I would strongly advise players to avoid The Bluffs until they are able to maintain the course properly, and go to Beaver Creek (about 15 minutes down the road) instead. Beaver Creek is usually in good to great condition and the staff there is very helpful.
Hopefully, the management at The Bluffs will actually get out on the course themselves and inspect the product they are offering to the golfing public and upgrade the course maintenance to an acceptable level.
The Bluffs is always nice. A cart girl would be a nice addition.
One of the best layouts in Louisiana
Arnold Palmer design that doesn't disappoint. Unique for Louisiana, an undulating course that will test your ability to get off of the tee. The greens are some of the more difficult to read...definitely pay attention to the grain. If you hit a driver 260+, play from the black tees and enjoy the course as Arnie intended.
