A Champions Tour favorite: Tom Fazio's Fallen Oak Golf Club on the Mississippi coast

SAUCIER, Miss. -- Since coming on board a few years ago, the Mississippi Gulf Resorts Classic has become a favorite among Champions Tour players. One reason is the hospitality and food, but another is the host course, Fallen Oak Golf Club, a superb Tom Fazio layout that can play as long as 7,487 yards.

The senior tour players, of course, don't play it at that length, but from where they do, the course is not only formidable, but enjoyable as well. There's water on around half the holes, the greens are undulated and generally large, and the design takes advantage of the natural terrain and mature oaks and pines that are found in the region.

Recently, Fallen Oak underwent a renovation (supervised by Fazio). It included a redo of the bunkers, and removal of 21 of them, cutting the total number from 84 to 63. The project took most of the fairway bunkers out of play for the amateurs, and it also softened them to allow the pros, if they get in them, to recover.
