Could be a great course......but the regulars are the worst ever!
The rate wasn't bad considering it is near a major tourist area. The setting is beautiful and the course wasn't in bad shape for this time of year. Fairways were pretty rough, but tee boxes and greens weren't too bad. The problem is the locals treat this course like their personal country club back home! Absolutely no courtesy in regards to pace of play, if I had it to do over, I would have forced my way through the lackadaisical pace of play by the regulars!
I should have been expecting the country club attitude, I had two locals cut in front of me without even acknowledging me while paying for my round. The bad part is the staff recognized it and seemed perfectly okay with it! Bottom line is, the regulars are jerks, be prepared to be assertive and send them a reminder that this is a very public course!
Had a 11:48 tee time held up for 10plus minutes by the starter and then let a4sum go off before me. Had to wait for every shot and thay would not let me play through. Made for a Long Round
Good for the money!!
I played this course 8 years ago before my most recent round. The lack of rain certainly had an impact on the condition but considering this it was very acceptable. The layout is quite good. The many elevated greens and doglegs make you place your shot and pick the right club to land on the green, not roll on to it. All in all a good experience.
There has been little improvement in the course in the 9 years I have been playing here. Cart paths are in bad shape. Condition of the course is below average winter conditions for the area.
Good bang for your buck
The is in fair shape, there spots that could use some grass. Greens were ok.
State park
Good value for money. Lot of golfer Enjoyed round with friends
The greens were hard, the ball bounced high and would not check up. The fairway grass was very sparse, there were places in the fairways that was just sand. The layout was good and challenging, but the conditions took away from it.
Mediocre
Course is average but overpriced. Rained out so only played 9 holes
The recent storm has knocked down many of the large trees. The layout is nice, Pace of play good for a winter golfing place, natural beauty is good. Greens are coming along nicely for the amount of traffic. Overall the course lacks the TLC of a country club but the price is about half.
enjoyable round of golf
refuse golf course is a nice course. tree lined fairways that are plenty wide. fairly large greens, but are very slow when putting.
overall it is a fun well layed out course.
Beautiful Setting, Average Course
The Refuge at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama is in a beautiful setting, but the course is average at best. The staff is friendly and the grill staff is especially good making you feel truly appreciated. For a real treat give the "Bunker Burger" a try. Their burgers are pretty good but add a slice of pineapple and some jalapenos and this burger is a real hit.
The course has little elevation change as with many courses along the Gulf coast. The fairways are generally wide but if you stray too far left or right the trees and can imprison you - speaking from experience. The fairways are OK with few really wet spots but if you have a long putt on any of the greens, bring a 1 iron! I won't say they are the slowest greens I have putted ( I have played on a cow pasture), but they are generally SLOW. Unless you find yourself on a patch that has been damaged they generally roll true and don't take as much break as you might read.
great course
Great time , Good course, Staff very friendly
