Refuge Golf Club at Gulf State Park

Course was well layed out. Fairways and greens were rough.Maybe better when grass starts growing in April or May..

So I just moved to Gulf Shores, so as I normally do, I found a tee time on Golf Now. But it was for 3:08pm. The lady at check in didn't like the fact that I was able to get that tee time. She told I wouldn't be be to get the full 18 in and that I had to be back in at 5:45 at the latest. But I couldn't get a refund since it was through Golf Now, which I understand. But as I finished the back 9 before I started the front, I went and asked the gentleman in which I saw since the lady wasn't around and the PRO shop was locked up early also if if he wanted me make the turn or just get a rain check for the other 9. I was just trying to be considerate. He said he would rather me get a rain check. But when he went to find her, she refused and again told me I had til 5:45 to play and that was it. But it's the way her attitude was when she didn't think I could here her. Maybe next she will make sure the door is shut before she cops an attitude behind my back. Needless to say I won't be back. Also since I am in the hospitality industry, they won't be getting any recommendations from my guest. If they didn't want to have someone book that tee time, she could have just taken it out of the system like she did with the others. Although she acknowledged that she canceled Some tee times after mine. Needless to say I won't be back.

overall speed of play was great. Paired with another twosome with our ability 8 to 10 handicaps. Played the course in 3 and 1/2 hours. Very little waiting .

Pace was abnormally slow. Start time 1:45. Only completed 9 holes by 4:25. Staff offered 9 hole raincheck as course closeted at 5:00pm. Decent but not great course.....old golf carts.

A very slow foursome (on carts) two groups ahead. They had an entire hole ahead of them with no one on it. Had to wait at least four to five minutes or more on every tee and fairway shot as did the group immediately ahead of us - not a ranger in sight. Grateful they weren't walking or we wouldn't have finished by sundown. Great weather saved the day.

Wide flat fairways and large greens make this a very playable course. Most of the golfers on this day were walkers which I like to see.

Greens were much better than in the fall (October). Course "might" have been overbooked as pace of play was slower than previous rounds. Overall, I was pleased with the course conditions. Excellent value!

This course is flat enough for average players yet has facets to it that is challenging to the lower handy cap player.

PLayed in the afternoon. Weather was great. Only negative was greens were slow. Saw 5 deer on the back nine. Must finish before sundown. Pace of play was slow on the front nine.

It is difficult to find a good course where you can walk 18. This is one where you can. Yes, it is a public course, the conditions are not perfect, the rough is actually rough, etc... But you can walk!

Fun course to play, layout is good, many holes are very challenging but greens were very slow , fuzzy and bumpy. Worth what I paid.

Needs improvement. Greens are in bad shape.Cut grass was pilled up between fairways. Cart was almost inoperable.

We had a very good time playing a round of golf on 11/21/2015 , and the weather was nice.

I really enjoyed the course. Very friendly staff and enjoyed bar after round. Green have some rough spots so if you want excellent greens look elsewhere. But if you're out golfing, looking for a scenic older course with live oak trees and a relaxed atmosphere I can recommend this course. I enjoyed my round and plan to return again this month.

Wide fairways with no houses nearby. Makes for a relaxing round. Lots of tall trees off to the side block the wind so it feels really good on a colder day.

Nice course lay out, fun to play. The greens were in rough shape however still playable expect to add 5-6 strokes to your game because of it. Their rack rate is high for the course.

Played here several years ago, course was in decent shape then, average muni condition. This time the course was in poor shape. Clumps of grass on some greens, fairways thin to bare. Doesn't look like course has been reseeded in along time. Noticed a lot of what looked like management types every where. Spend the money on the course.

This course was poor on greens and tees to say the least.
Would not have played even with the good price from Golf Now if we had known the course was this bad of shape.

Greens were in pretty bad shape. Overall course in pretty good shape

I enjoyed the course. It has a nice layout with risk/reward decisions on several par-4's. Several of the greens had some bad spots. Pace of play was good. I would play there again as long as it wasn't crowded.
